With reference to your letter No. P/1 of the
16th. ultimo,, and connected correspondence, I am directed by the Governor to inform you that your acceptance of the post of Direct -or Designate of the Hongkong Observatory, on the terms set forth in my letter No. D/24/11 of the 14th. March, has been notified to
the Secretary of State for the Colonies, and that your request
for a house allowance until free quarters are available has also
been submitted for his consideration.

As stated in my letter referred to above it will be necessary for you to proceed as soon as possible after the 10th. of May next to take up your new duties. Unless instruutions to the contrary are received from the Secretary of State, His Excellency is prepared to grant you leave on full salary from Mauritius during the period of your voyage, subject to an adjustment of the account should you receive any salary from the Government of Hongkong in respect of this period. You will also receive an advance to meet the cost of passages for yourself and your family, such advance to be accounted for to the Hongkong Government on your arrival at your destination.
